Obama Won!

Barack Obama: winner

Barack Obama will be the next President of the United States! If Greg and I hadn’t made fun of John McCain and Sarah Palin in recent episodes, the outcome of the election might have been different. Who knows?

Obama, you should declare The Paunch Stevenson Show the official podcast of the U.S…or at least give us jobs on your staff. Come on.

  1. Intelligence 1, Stupidity 0. Goodbye evangelicals!!! Hope you had a good time spewing hate and dumbness (and who could forget; people riding dinosaurs!!) throughout the past 8 years.

  2. First off, Rob, put an Obama picture on there, I can’t look at Palin.

Second, Dennis, I wouldn’t say the Christian conservatives completely lost yesterday. While Pro-Life ballot questions failed in South Dakota and Colorado, and Washington state approved Jack Kevorkian suicides, bans on gay marriage passed in every state they were on the ballot. In fact, I don’t think gay marriage has passed in any state yet when given to the voters.

Third, in California, I think Proposition 2 will pass widely, which is fantastic. That was to stop the horrible living conditions granted factory farm animals.

  3. Greg,

I meant that Evangelicals have lost the edge to influence a national election. Outside of California’s repeal of gay marriage, which was only brought upon by heavy spending by Mormons (over 74 million!), and indifference by the people in the Bay Area it would not have passed, most of the props on the ballots were in deep red states. Colorado, NC, Virginia, Ohio all have strong evangelical communities and helped Bush in the last 2 elections. The same fire and brimstone speeches really had no effect this year. In NC, for example, AM radio is all gospel on Sunday, and once you go 10 miles west of Chapel Hill, it’s all stars and bars and churches. These same people still voted for Obama! And Liddy Dole’s godless attack aid on Kay Hagan fared miserably this year and cost her a Senate seat(which was Jesse Helm’s no less!) Republicans can not cling to the bible if they want to have influence in the next 20 years or so. Even Michigan passed stem cell research and medicinal marijuana. We are not like Europe yet, but beliefs in mythological beings affecting present day legislation seems to be waning on a national level. Arkansas, Mississippi need not apply.

Prop 2 was good vote, although I buy only organic free range poultry and beef, so it doesn’t affect me all that much. However, as a researcher I worry about PETA influence in animal testing. Without animal research, we would be living in stone age.

  4. Dennis,

You are right, the fear mongering no longer works. Especially when you are broke! However, there is still a near solid 40-45% of the electorate who are staunchly conservative and will not budge. The Center-Right coalition has been destroyed though by Bush. It might take 10 years, but they’ll be back, you can count on it.

Was PETA involved in the Prop 2? I thought that was mainly the Humane Society of the US? I often give money to the HSUS and the ASPCA, but like you am ecstatic with Peta. Their investigations into the puppy mills and factory farming have been extremely worthy, but the lady who founded it is just way over the top and her, frankly, obsession is counterproductive.

And Rob, where are you, I said take that Palin picture down! Down I say!

  5. Wow, nice discussion! I’ll replace the Palin: Big Dummy picture tomorrow. I can’t look at that giant balloon head anymore, either.

Dennis, I agree that people’s personal beliefs shouldn’t have anything to do with government policy. Religious fanatics should stay out of politics. What does religion have to do with national security, public education, health care, roads, or energy? Nothing.

Greg, I agree that the Republicans will eventually regain control. I just hope that when they do, they go easy on the military spending, oil drilling, privacy violations, scare tactics, and lieing.

Americans were smart enough to elect a forward-thinking President. Maybe someday soon they’ll be smart enough to stop driving SUVs and eating Cheez Whiz, too.
